Fist of all I want to say that this is my 10th post and contribution to this blog.

Ok ,to have a better knowledge about job,career,employment etc,we need to study about economic also.From what I just found about Malaysian Econimic Report 2008,
According from that report,industries/field and its employment workforce in 2007 are:

Soft Skills and Students

I think Malaysia educational system did noy much developing and polishing sof-skill in their students which tt will bring some problems when they need to find a job for example they need to undergo an job interview which soft-skill is very vital.
To counter this issues
Some of the institutions today have started to offer soft skill programs for graduating students but these are mostly done on ad hoc basis to counter the unemployment problem.
For this polishing class, emphasis will be given on the soft skills, mastery of English language, interpersonal ability, leadership and others which are often sought after in a promising employee. On top of that, entrepreneurship values will also be instilled among the graduates to open up the possibility of venturing in their own business.

Choosy Job Seekers

In past 20 years, I can say that many graduated students are not choosy in finding a job.But how different it is today. Nowadays, candidates are expecting job offer to come with a package – a good pay, convenient working location, no shift, no work beyond 6pm and so on, with everything handed in a silver platter. I think they are so pampered students and the rather have no job than got a hard job

Academic Achivement Has Little Do In Job?

From my own experience with senior graduates – not once, but many times – has convinced me that today’s academic achievement has little to do with how well you can excel in the working world. I used to be short listing 4-5 first class graduates for an interview and in the end rejected them all, and hired a second class student instead. It seems that the country is blessed with institutions highly capable to produce low quality, academic achievers. This statement may not bode well with some of the institutions out there but this should be taken as a challenge, not a mockery.

From what i just found.I want to tell you all that economic structure has changed.Nowdays the economic mostly change into service sector with requires people who do not only possess the right technical knowledge, but also those who possess the right soft skills It leads to unemployment to the engineering students which is so many wainting for the job.In addition,unlike the manufacturing sector, a company providing services would not require a large number of staff to be employed.Statisticshow that between 2006 and 2007, the country’s manufacturing employment grew by 3%, from 3.244 million workers, to 3.347 million. The business services sector employment, on the other hand grew by 2.6%, from 0.771 million, to 0.791 million.

“Song BILA IZRAIL DATANG MEMANGGIL” VS “CULTIVATE SEED ON THE LAST DAY”

Dr. Siraje suddenly asked us: “What will you do if you know that tomorrow is the day of Qiamat?”. Many students responded in several answer, until Hasrina said she will do teaching since she loves teaching. Suddenly Dr. Siraje concluded the discussion with the hadith that Rasulullah told a companion to CULTIVATE SEED IN YOUR HAND EVEN THOUGH YOU KNOW TORMMOROW IS GOING TO BE END OF THE DAY. The message is clear, to be productive until the last of your breath! This is a true concept of “AWARE OF DEATH AND PREPARE FOR IT” as mentioned by Rasulullah in another hadith.

However, in Malaysia, during the time around 1980’s, there was a popular a nasyid song titled “BILA IZRAIL DATANG MEMANGGIL” (WHEN ANGEL OF IZRAIL IS CALLING). In this song, it contains message that people will shiver when Izrail comes and imagination of how the death is. Nevertheless, government has banned this song by reason that it is related to Al-Arqam group, but what I heard from old people, they said Tun Mahathir actually does not like this song since it influence our workers to become scare of death which finally make their determination to live become lower and not productive. In order to encourage people to be productive, they banned this song.

I do not know should agree with the action or not, but what I think is, when think about my death is coming, supposedly I should do the best for sake of my pride to die with the best achievement is in memory of my life. I might not agree with those who only prepare for the hereafter while talking about death, and totally neglect the worldly matters. The preparation should be balance because we have to bear in mind, while we are working, it is also considered as ibadah since we are struggling to fulfill the needs of our children and other family members too. By fulfilling our responsibilities towards others, it is also an ibadah and this thing is related to the hereafter life in order to get rewards from Allah. Hence, open our mind when think about DEATH. “BE OPTIMIST AND PRODUCTIVE, DON’T BE PESSIMIST AND PASSIVE!”

CULTURE INFLUENCE IN CAREER WORLD

Dr. Siraje has said during our class: “In Malaysia, we can see women become a bus driver, but ladies, if you stay in Saudi Arabia, for example, you cannot dream of being a bus driver”.

This is a statement of him which reflects the culture influence in career world in a country. A country like Malaysia absolutely gives a great and almost equal chance to women to go for work at outside. However, in certain countries, like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, it is very rare to see women working outside. Even if they are working, basically they only do type of work which can be done in their house compound or in places where they do not mix with male. For instance, they do sewing, which suitable to be done in their own houses. This condition is due to the restrictions they have in culture they value. However, the advantage of implementing such policy in their country, even though women cannot freely get the equal chance to enter professional fields as male, the crime rates in certain Arabs countries are very low. This is totally different compared to Malaysia, where women conquer the career world, which leads to many male jobless or disqualified to get a better positions, where finally males who are desperate to fulfill needs of life will do crimes that involved violations against women, such as snatching, raping, and so on.

Another issue in cultural influence is how people value a “gender dominated“ career determines the job market of the profession. For instance, in comparison of Malaysia and United States of America, it is hard to see men become nurse at hospital in Malaysia, but in their country, as shown in a medical TV series programme, ER, it is a common phenomenon men become nurse. Therefore, by having perception that nursing is a women’s profession, male in Malaysia tend to look for other job where finally influence job market demands in other profession, whereas in United States of America, the job market for nursing is attract attention from both gender, male and female. In conclusion, it is clear that CULTURE HAVE INFLUENCE IN CAREER WORLD.

“BECOME CRAZY” + “DO WHAT YOU LIKE” = SUCCESS IN CAREER

During class, Dr. Siraje sometimes keeps on repeating to tell us the story of Gallileo, the person who brought new perspective to people at his time, which the world is spherical, not flat, was jailed since people assuming he was crazy. Nevertheless, what I can see, Dr. Siraje highlighted this point is to make us realize persons who can generate ideas, who can contribute or exploring something new or able to produce something extraordinary, might be the successful people in their career. Besides, Dr. Siraje sometimes say “Do what you like, money will come later” in order to encourage us to enjoy our career world or to make our hobby as our job, where many people in this world are getting profit by commercialized their hobby. We can see in world history, only those who contribute something new or i.e. those who had done innovations, are those who we remembered until now, while some of them become among richest men in the world. Mostly, they satisfied and enjoyed doing what they like. For instance, Thomas Edison devoted his life for trying to invent a bulb. Even though he failed many times, he enjoyed doing it since it was his determination and interest to do research on it. In this case, we can see how Thomas Edison did what he like the most, and the result of it is he got satisfaction and become remembered until today for being the inventor. In other case, we can see how Bill Gates quit from his study since he wanted to focus on what he wants and what he likes, where finally he becomes one of richest men in United States of America. Most of the time, potential job candidates are not aware of the mistakes they make before and during the interview. These small mistakes that might cost them a job.

1-Money Talk

Never bring up talk on salary at the beginning of the interview. Only talk about salary or your employment package, i.e. remuneration, benefits, etc. when the interviewer asks you or the matter has not been brought up and the interview is near its end.

2-Failing to Ask Questions
Ask questions to show that you are interested in the job, lack of enthusiasm is a killer of your chances of employment.

3-Lying or Concealing Information
Never attempt to lie or cover up any vital information, no matter how important you thought it was for you to conceal the information. You may land the job but how long it will be before you are found out?

4-Criticising or Slating Your Previous Employers/Company/Colleagues or Complaining About Your Day
No one likes a person who complains, keep in mind that it is not a recommended icebreaker. You are being interviewed to promote yourself as the best possible candidate for the post, not to criticise others or complain about the train/car that broke down on your way to the interview.

5-Body Language
Avoid weak or too strong handshakes, minimal or almost no eye contact with the interviewer and slouching when seated. Keep a straight back when seated and refrain from fidgeting or shaking your legs, twitching your nose, biting your nails or other signs that showed your nervousness. Take a deep breath to remain calm and be aware of your body language. Your body language tells your interviewers more about you than your speech.
6-Inappropriate Dressing
Avoid revealing clothes or being underdressed - stick to conventional dressing, i.e. mono colours and minimal accessories.

7-Talking Too Much
It is not wise to talk too much and fail to listen and understand the questions asked. Oral Expression — The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
Oral Comprehension — The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
Problem Sensitivity — The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
Speech Clarity — The ability to speak clearly so others can understand you
Inductive Reasoning — The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
Written Expression — The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand. Deductive Reasoning — The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.

I just want to share my opinion on this.. I believe that vision and mission in life is so important the life of every people.. It is the law of the nature.."You will get back what you give".. When you have the clear vision and mission on it, you are near to the successful..

The example like what DR. Siraje told us in the previous class is Bill Gates. He is very clear with he wants to achieve in his life..At the same time, he also knows the ways and the steps on how to achieve it.. I really proud of him altough at the beginning, people around him always condemned him due to what he did..He drop out from the university and resigned from the job that he already have..

For me, we can use him as the role model and the way he faced the stress from the people around him was really useful for us..-who always being the victim from the people who never satisfy or understand ourself..

Many people follow his steps and become successful just like him..We cannot consider that the people who have the CAREER is somone who sit at the office,receive the income for every month and have the degree from the university nowadays..

Meaning that, as long you have the deep interest on something where it can serve the need of society, you can be the rich people as well..

in my opinion, to have contract with KPM is better for some reasons..
maybe for some people, they belive that to have contract is difficult and it is juz like 'makan gaji' for ur whole life until the end..
but for me i prefer to have guaranteed in my job rather than any reason..
i think it is more important than anything else..to further study is other matter..we still can further study in the future .. no one can stop u if u wan to improve ur knowledge.. but this is very subjective thing.. every ppl are free to have their own view on this ... thats all..wassalam.. =)

in my opinion guidance n counseling unit or we called UBK is very important in order for us to attract student in the first place.. for me i have this kind of opinion because of my past experiece before in my previous school..for sure, as a form4 student at that time,i am really curious about my future life regarding further study in which field,what career will i be involved,and many more.. i was thinking to seek for the counseling service n i guess the UBK environment was the reason that encourage me to do so..the UBK has a lot of information about career and the counselor job is very good where he did well in provide all information about career for the student..so to all future counselors, UBK is one thing that encourage the student in order for them to be interested in career counseling..hopefully we can do good job in school in th future,insyaallah.. =)

I interested in sis Shakirah's story. Same goes to sis Aisyah's story. We always dream to get something and we think that it is the best for us. But Allah knows the best. I have the same experience just like both of you. I want to be a teacher since I am in primary school. I try for a few times but I am fail. After my SPM I miss an oppurtunity to be a teacher because of the date line is already finish. Then, I continue my study in form 6 because I am frustrated with my SPM. Besides, I want to beat my friends and be at par with them. I am notice that the form 6 is only for 1 and a half years while diploma is for 3 years. I did not want to take a long time and use a big amount of loan and as a result be in form 6. Before that, I am the sciences student but after a few month I make a decision to be in human sciences. I love being a sciences student but I know my capability. At the begining I can not concerntrate with my study but when Iam in upper 6 I really realize that this is the only chance for me. Alhamdulillah, I got flying colour result after facing a long journey. I am very happy and during I am fill up the form of UPU I am choose to be in education field. But once again, I miss my MEDSI test and I know that it is hard to be in this field. But I remind myself that one day I still want to be in this field. I get an offer to be in IRKHS at IIUM. I come here and try to accept it. But, during the ta'aruf week I get a chance to convert in education. I am just fill up the form and one day I get a call to go for MEDSI. After the MEDSI test I go for the interview and during the interview session I can not control my emotion and I am cry in front of the interviewer. But I am try my best to answer their question and always pray that my dream be real realm. At the end, I got a call that inform me to get my offer letter to join INSTED from A&R. And now I am happy with what I am doing. May Allah helps me to do, to be and to give the best. May Allah bless all of us and guide us in our live.

Dear sis aisyah, I have read your post; if you fail in interview, what you will do… I also have same experiences with you but in my story, it’s quite complicated than you are. Juz want to share with you, I want to be a teacher since I’m in primary schools. That’s my ambition since at early age because many of my family members are teachers including my dad. From that, I inspired to be like them, teaching for the nation.

After the SPM result, I applied for education in TESL, and I was called for an interview but I’m failed to get the offer. I’m quite sad but I’m still continuing my journey in seeking knowledge. Then I got an offered to study HND in Business field. I accept that offered because I don’t want to study in Form 6. It is because in form 6, it quite tough and I don’t want to face it because at that time, I know that I can’t do it. So, I choose to be in KPM, studying business course and at there student were sponsored by MARA. So, I do not have to worry about loan or what I need to pay after I graduated from there. I’m just concentrated my study until I’m graduated from that place.

After doing my Diploma, I work for a while. And after that I apply for ISMP, the program that we are in now. And I was called for an interview in MEDSI test, I pass the test, and I was called for an interview. In that interview session, I did the best as well as I can but unfortunately I didn’t pass in that interview also. I’m still remembering there are one interviewer who is a woman is very strict and fierce. She always critiques on my answer in the interview sessions. I’m feeling quite sad because I think I already give the best but I’m still didn’t get it. Sometimes, I think…maybe it is fate that I will not be a teacher forever…but my dad always give me support not to give up before strive on. I got an offer to study in Degree in business field. I took that opportunity although I didn’t get what the most I want. I’m still accepting it because business is main second interest. I told to myself that, I will finish my degree there and I will take KPLI program after that in order to be a teacher. That’s really show my interest to teach the students is very deeper. I also never want to give up until I have been given the opportunity. Therefore, I study in UITM for 6 month and at the same time I didn’t give up at all. I apply for ISMP for second time and for this time I passed in the interview session. I’m quit from UITM and I enter to this IIUM.

I’m very happy with that.. At last, my ambition to be a teacher will been realized on in next coming years. What I love to do will become my career in the future. I will study hard to make sure that an opportunity that given to me will been used as well as I can. Insyaallah... I would like to share my working experience to all of you. As for your information, before I enter to this IIUM, there are long and exciting journeys that I had already face and gone through. I have a HND qualification in Business (Marketing) and before I enter to this field in counseling, I have been working with Petronas Fertilizer Kedah Sdn Bhd which is one of company under Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS). I have been working there for almost 7 month. Before that, I ‘m doing my practical there and I apply for the job placement before I finish my practical period at that place. Alhamdullilah, I was called for an interview and during my interview, my supervisor is one of the interviewers and I’m feeling very comfortable to give reaction and cooperation in this interview. At first they ask me about what my specialization, my interest, how I want to promote myself to that organization and why should they accept me as an employee. I try my best to answer that questions and alhamdulillah, I pass the interview. I have been offered a job position in Business Performance Improvement Section in Organizational Performance Improvement Department as Event Management. I’m enjoy with my job there, with a lot of experiences, meeting with many people around and throughout that working time, I gain many experiences and learn many beneficial skill that has helped much in building my personality now. One of that is my communication skill, before I involve in working environment, I didn’t have much exposure in dealing with people. When I work under PFK, I tend to learn the skill in order easy for me to deal with other people from my own boss. He is very friendly person and he’s quite knowledgeable. I’m quite impressed with him.

That’s job is very interesting but sometimes it needs my full energy and my fully focus to deliver the best to the organization. Sometimes, I always think, how I’m going to be when I had married in the future. Of course I cannot give my fully attention to my family because this job required me to go for an outstation and need my time until late night. Although I think in that way, I’m still enjoying my working life there until I got an offer to further my study in doing degree; I seek an opinion from my boss. He asks me to further my study to the degree level. i took his opinions as well in making my own decision. Actually i also had ever shared my interest in teaching with my seniors there including my boss. he also has ever asks to me whether teaching is my main interest. He just say that just do what you love, you will get satisfaction in that. That’s the word I still kept bear in mind until forever. By thinking to that, I leave my job that is very high paid salaries without thinking twice because I confirmed with my self. I want to be a teacher or school counselor, to give my services to people who needed and help my nation to achieve higher education in their life.

So, my advices to all my friends, whatever you want to do in your life, just do..don't think about money...as dr siraje say...do what you love, money will come later....although we gain a lot of money but without satisfaction in what we do, we will not get anythings actually......

I would like to share with all of you about someone I know on his career..My friend actually. He is one of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Skudai graduated student. Not really handsome actually hehe... but the interesting thing i would like to share with all of you is...He was taking Remote Sensing course but now his career is an editor of a Production House in Bangi. I ask him... "is there any relation between what he was study and what did he doing now"... and he said..."There are no relation at all".I was going to his office in Bangi and I can see by myself that what he is doing now is something that he interested to.I can see his creativity in handling his editing of a television program.what we have to put when a program started, what we have to do to make the program achieve the objective and target in an attractive way.And when the program is finish,his name appear on television screen...

Finally, we reach near the end of this class "Career Development" fuuhhh...

and for the previous claz, many of our friends come with good presentation about career review.. Congrats for them. :) after all those presentation, i hope we can gain much knowledge and get the wider view about world of work that we're going to face.

from the presentation, we know that when it comes to career, there are several skills that we need to possess gradually to make sure that we can cope with the environment of work especially people around us. i wont say that reading books is bad, to know all the theory that taught in da class is not good, but to be successful u re also need to prepare urself with self experience that i think more valuable than all knowledge that u can copy from books. these kind of experience might be unique which is differs from others. and the most important thing is to LEARN a lesson from that and use it in da future.

for example, there are person that are successful such as Radical Touch owner, presented by my friend. yes, no doubt, he had qualification (Bachelor watever...)but thats only a stepping stone for him to gain general knowledge, 1 piece of certificate and make friends and contacts. he then use the environment factors around him to set up a company that based on printing, photocopying without any loan and able to stand up till now. i agree that it sounds quite easy compared to others such as Trump's empire, Bill Gates softwares, and so on but i believe that without high skills in social and enterprising skills he wont able to make it. n this should be a good example for us.

finally, i dunno what am i trying to say.. just try to keep my post reach 10th.. and hope it worth it. babai... c u. n i think diz is the 9th post. wait for one more soon. tQ... :) gud lak 4 all!

as we all know, some of the group in our class have presented the profesional interview results today....i see that there are such a wonderful people that you all have interviewed and it give me new information about their true routine in their life as profesional. Like Ikhtiar and Lukman who presented a chemist. If we want to be a great counselor in this planet earth,the counselors must make their students know themselves.Means,the counselors should find what are the interest of their students if the students have no mission in lives.I have one story that similar with Dr Siraje.One of my junior was a very intelligent student and got straight A’s in her SPM in 2005.But the problem was she do not know which specialization she want to further her study and even she don’t know what was her interest!!!.She said to my school counselor that she only concentrate at her study and study hard as what her parents wanted her to success in her examination.Means,she wanted to satisfy her parents’ need.Actually,her father is a science teacher in my school.My counselors was disappointed with her because she was the best student at that school but could not become a role model for her juniors because she has no mission in life.Then the counselor give counseling service to her and recently,I heard she is studying abroad and the counselor has done a very good job.

On the previous post, I've told that there are no guarantee for us to get hired by the government. So, why don't spent our little time to read on these do and don't tips in creating our resume...

Job Resume Do's...
Do always follow a uniform font and format.
Do always have dates of employment listed.
Do keep clean alignment - all bullets, dates, tables, etc. in tab lines.
Do be consistent. For example, if you use the date format 11/98-12/00 on one job, don't use 1998-2000 on another.
Do make sure that you list your employment history in chronological order, beginning with the most recent or current job at the top down to oldest at the bottom.
Do only put your education at the top of your resume if you have a degree; if you've only completed high school, put it at the bottom.
Do list skills used/learned in bulleted, partial sentence structure, under each position. This shows a timeline of what skills were acquired when and where.
Do only list the last ten years of experience, unless your current position or a significant part of your experience dates back further.
Do have a "Summary of Qualifications" outlining what your specialties are.

A GOOD memory is an asset for everyone, but it is essential for job seekers. Have you ever failed to recall key information during an interview, or do you get overwhelmed by a ton of information you have to remember while preparing for one?

1 DISBELIEF

When you are preparing for an interview, it is a good idea to talk to someone in the organisation you want to work in. It’s not that difficult to get in touch with some employees if you try. Doing this helps you to better understand the organisation and makes the process more interesting because you can now ask questions and get reliable answers.

Here’s a tip: If the information is not interesting enough, it’s your duty to make sure it is interesting.

3 DISUSE

The fastest way to forget information is to not use it in your day-to-day life. Research indicates that people forget about 80 per cent of the new information they learn in less than 24 hours. So use the information you collect as much as possible.

After putting in some effort to compile as much data as you can about the organisation you want to join, you will have a fair idea about its different aspects.

However, if you don’t take proper measures to retain the information, you may forget much of it before the interview. Here are some things you can do to make sure that the information is retained in your brain for a long time:
● Explain the information to someone else.
● Discuss the points with your friends.
● Write a summary in your own words.
● Write an article about it.
● Think about how you can pass on the information to a five-year-old child.

By doing any of the above tasks, you are now making the process of learning and memorising an enjoyable one.

Memory improvement is not possible unless you kick the three stumbling blocks out of your way. If you take action in eliminating these traps, you will not only do better in your interviews, you will also effectively cope with “information overloads” once you are on the job.

Counselors assist people with personal, family, educational, mental health, and career problems. Their duties vary greatly depending on their occupational specialty, which is determined by the setting in which they work and the population they serve.

Educational, vocational, and school counselors provide individuals and groups with career and educational counseling. School counselors assist students of all levels, from elementary school to postsecondary education. They advocate for students and work with other individuals and organizations to promote the academic, career, personal, and social development of children and youth. School counselors help students evaluate their abilities, interests, talents, and personalities to develop realistic academic and career goals. Counselors use interviews, counseling sessions, interest and aptitude assessment tests, and other methods to evaluate and advise students. 1) Super’s recognized that career grow up through the life span. It means career development is a long-life psychological and behavioral process and contextual which influences shaping one’s career over the life span. One of Super’s greatest contributions to career development has been his emphasis of the role self-concept development in career choices. Self-concept defined as our understanding our own self; what kind of person I have? What types of personality do I practice? What kind of abilities I have? Super recognized that the self-concept changes and develops throughout people’s lives as a result of experience. People successively refine their self-concept over time and application to the world of work creates adaptation in their career choice.

2) The second one is Holland’s Career Typology.
This theory was developed by John Holland. Holland’s theory is grounded in what he calls modal personal orientation or a developmental process established through heredity and the individual’s life history of reacting to environmental demands. Generally, individuals are attracted to a particular occupation that meets their personal needs and provides them satisfaction. In our culture, persons can be categorized as one of the following: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising or Conventional. There are six modal environments: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional. People usually search for environments that will let them exercise their skills and abilities, express their attitudes and values, and take on agreeable problems and roles. 3) Lent, Brown and Hackett’s Social Cognitive Career Theory
The Social Cognition Career Theory (SCCT) has grown out by Albert Bandura’s Social
Cognitive theory. He attempts to address issues of culture, gender, genetic endowment, social context and unexpected life events that may interact with and supersede the effects of career-related choices. The SCCT focuses on the connection of self-efficacy, outcome expectations and personal goals that influence an individual’s career choice. QUALITY TEACHERS

In the Star on May 12, 2005, our education minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has announced that in a bid to "enhance the quality of teachers in the country", "all teacher training colleges may soon be elevated to teacher education institutes (IPGs)".

Instead of providing a teacher training course at diploma level, IPGs would offer degree programmes to meet the target of having only graduate teachers in secondary schools and 50% graduate teachers in primary schools by 2010.

It is laudable that the Mininstry of Education (MOE) have identified the quality of teachers being one of the key factors in producing quality students and graduates from our education system. Some of the common remarks (although I've yet to see a detailed study) made with regards to teachers today are not very flattering. They have included being "very poor in English language", "disinterested in teaching" as well as being of poor quality because "the newer recruits are that of graduates who were not able to seek employment elsewhere".

However, MOE should note that a superficial change and rise in status of training colleges to IPGs, and awards of degree programs instead of diplomas will not solve the problems we face today. It is a similar problem faced by many "universities" today. Over the last 5-8 years, many polytechnics have been converted to universities in the country in a bid to improve the "quality of education" and increase the number of degree graduates. What the conversion has managed to do is to successfully increase the number of degree graduates but without being able to significantly improve the quality of education - hence you are getting diploma graduates masked as degree holders. Given that scenario, it's not surprising that the number of degree holders who are jobless have increased significantly. What I'd really be interested in, will be to find out which institutions have our jobless degree holders graduated from (if someone can provide me with these statistics, that'll be great!)

Given the above, it's to a certain extent comforting to hear our Education Minister outlined:

... four strategies to elevate the teaching profession – enhancing the selection of teacher trainees, improving the teaching environment, restoring regard for teachers in society and promoting pride in teachers.

“There have already been some positive developments, such as the new promotional opportunities for excellent principals and teachers to the Special Grade C (Jusa C) category."

Of the strategies outlined, I would regard "enhancing the selection of teacher trainees" as being the most important. For if the quality of recruits are high, these new teachers will perform credibly even in adverse circumstances for the other 3 factors mentioned. As highlighted by one of the comments on an earlier posting, there are many teachers who were of great quality and have produced brilliant students in the past, even though the facilities and environment are probably no where near what's available today. I'm a firm believer that if the new recruits to the teaching colleges are of poor quality (for e.g., diploma or degree graduates who can't find work in the private or even public sector), then the maxim of "rubbish in, rubbish out" will apply.Hence, one of the key reforms that are required by our education system (and as highlighted briefly on my posting on model schools) is the wage structure for teachers in Malaysia. I am certain that not even the Malaysian MOE will doubt the quality of education in Singapore, and the number 1 lesson we should pick from them (if nothing else) is to remunerate our teachers near to private sector levels. Our quality fresh graduates are paid between RM1,600 to RM2,200 in the private sector today. The new teachers with at least a good second class upper degree (say, CGPA > 3.0), should be paid at least RM1,500, if not more at RM1,800. All the other factors such as " to improve the lot of teachers, the ministry has commissioned a review of teachers’ workload" are not significantly useful. To me, even if a new graduate has the potential to be a great teacher, and has strong interest in being a teacher, it seems obvious to me that 9 out of 10 such cases will opt for a private sector position paying RM2,000 as opposed to a teaching profession today paying in the region of RM1,200 (with insignificant increments as well!). I would strongly argue for the case of lifting more of our diesel and petrol subsidies, if these subsidies are then diverted to pay our teachers. I am certain some RM6.7 billion of funds is more than sufficient to attract quality teachers to the profession, and this investment will be priceless to our future.

The Minister has also stated that:

“I have noticed that only teachers who take pride in their profession will strive to produce champions."

I agree with the above statement by the Minister. And consistent with my argument above, attracting the higher quality graduates to be teachers will likely create a pool of teachers who will take more "pride" in their profession. Poorer quality recruits will understandably have less pride in their work (there's a reason why they are "poorer"). The Minister has added:

“It is my hope that our education system will continue to be blessed with such teachers"

Yes, we all hope so too. :)

Importance of Career and Technical Education

Career and technical education has played a very important role throughout the past year and a half of my life. It has shown me, not only the importance of knowing what field a person is interested in, but the importance of having the training needed in that person’s field of interest. Without the help of this education, it is possible that many of my peers would currently be undecided in relation to a future career. Career and technical education is very helpful in teaching skills and expanding the knowledge of a variety of students. It also seems to help these students decide what type of career they may enjoy later on down the road.

Schools such as Live Oaks Career Development Campus encourage students to set high goals and stick with them. They teach students why it is important to set these goals, and attempt to put these students on a path heading toward success. I feel that schools such as Live Oaks have opened the eyes of students to passions never expected by these students; myself included. Without the help of Live Oaks, I would have never found the talent to draw, and would have never expanded this skill. Basically Live Oaks Career Development Campus has paved a path for many students. The only thing left to do is walk the path of success.

Career and technical educational schools such as Live Oaks offer many opportunities such as early placement, and financial aid for college, which no other school that I have attended in the past has offered. These schools seem to be all about the futures of their students. Their curriculum is almost identical to that of a Blue Ribbon School District, and they stress the importance of good grades and working hard at every challenge students may face. John L. Holland is an American psychologist who spent much of his career at Johns Hopkins University. He received his B.S. from the University of Omaha and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.

Holland is the creator of the best known and widely researched theory of career choice. It includes six personality types that are often abbreviated as RIASEC and are used to create the well known Holland Codes.

Holland Codes are personality types created by psychologist John L. Holland. As part of his theory of career choice, Holland's (1985) Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI) is the name of the test he created to measure an individual's type and match it with a list of career choices that would theoretically be good for that individual.

Holland mapped these types into a hexagon which he then broke down into the RIASEC job environments:

In making any decision, we have to consider many things and how our decisions may affects others. During the last week class, sir have asked about how we choose what we chose, does it based on our parent's and friend's opinion or by ourselves? For me, at the first stage of decision making process, I will make my own decision, after that, I will ask all people around me to know their opinion and maybe they can give more suggestion since different people has various of experiences.We must have a rational thinking in whatever we want to do. My interview experience

I have attended three interviews for a job along my life. My first interview was held at Audit Firm in Kuantan. I not feel nervous anymore. Maybe because my parents were beside me so I feel confident. They sent me to the company and wait until I finished my interview. When I entered the waiting room I saw about 15 girls also waiting for interview. My turn was the 2nd last. Ah…so bored to wait so long. While waiting for my turn I chat with them. Most of them were have diploma in account like me too. A few of them have experience in that field. But most of them don’t have experience in that field, they just finish their study. I also don’t have any experience in that field. Actually I was called for the interview after I registered myself in elx.gov.my. Have you open this web? It is very useful for us to find job. You just need to find which company you like and send your resume. There are so many company in that web.
We continue my story..then it was my turn. I knocked the door and entered the room. My heart start beating but I try to act confident. They are 5 men in front of me. I feel quit shock because they are too many. As I know usually only 2 or 3 interviewer will interview us right? It doesn’t matter la…
I sit after they ask to do so. And I give my smile to them. First they ask about myself. So I explain about myself, my study, and so on. I give my file of certificates to them. Each of them see my certificates and ask me many questions. Alhamdulillah I can answer all the question. And they look satisfied with my answer. They said my result is good and they satisfied with my involvement during study. One of them look very stern. He ask me one question about tax. Luckly, I give the right answer. After a bit long, I feel pleasant because they treat me warmly including the stern man. He also make a joke. A few question that they ask me are : how much salary I want, did I will accept any offer from other company, why I want to work there? How to manage with client?
After a few days I got a call from the company. They ask me to come. I was accepted to work there. I feel so happy. But my happiness was not long. Suddenly, my mother decide to not allow me to go. She worried that I will be alone there. We don’t have any relatives there. I also don’t have friends there. I feel very disappointed with my mum. I cry in my room. I not talk to her for a few days. But I feel guilty to do so to her. Then I believe there are hikmah behind the event righ?
My 2nd interview at Ranhill Sdn Bhd, J.B. I send my resume by post to this company and they call me for interview. Actually my friend work there and she told me about the vacancy. This time only 3 interviewer. I do wrong in this interview session, when I told them my dream was to be a teacher. My advice to you, while attended interview you must know about the company and give answer that show that you are really ready to work there. The result, I failed in the interview.
My 3rd interview also at JB. After failed the interview I decide to find any job vacancies in J.B. Actually I don’t send any resume I just entered the shop and ask the cashier is it any job vacancy? Then she ask me to fill the form and see her boss.It was one of the big book company in JB, Perdana Marketways. The interview session was very simple. The boss was interview me and ask simple question. Actually he really needed worker in marketing. So, I started work on that day. After a week, I was sent to Melaka with my senior. The job not related with my diploma. But I just go on with that job to get an experience. I have to go all school, ipta, or any department in Melaka to get book sales. It so tiring. And it was not easy to get sale. After 6 month I get offered from UIA. So I quit from the job and come here.

1)An intimate conversation might be the best for some topicsChoose the right moment and the right place. If you need to discuss something in private with a person, make sure that the choice of venue is private and that you do not feel uncomfortable about the possibility of being overheard. On the other hand, if you need to make your point before a group of people, ensure that the location is somewhere that your discussion will be audible to all who are present to ensure that you engage each and every person in the group.

2)The 3 points are even more important when you are presenting a speech to a large audienceOrganize and clarify ideas in your mind before you attempt to communicate them. If you are feeling passionate about a topic, you may become garbled if you haven't already thought of some key points to stick with. A good rule-of-thumb is to choose three main points and keep your communication focused on those. That way, if the topic wanders off course, you will be able to return to one or more of these three key points without feeling flustered.
Stay on-topic. Make sure all facts, stories, allusions, etc, add to the conversation/debate. Again, refer to the three key points. *Avoid phrases that imply that you have not listened fully to the points communicated to you such as "Yeah but..." Instead, learn to use phrases that provide confirmation that you have heard the other side fully, such as "I see. Now tell me what you would say to this..."

*Keep in mind that sometimes we need to listen "between the lines," but there are times when we need to absorb things at face value. When we listen intensively, our minds are often busy placing what we hear into the situation and our emotions, which creates barriers to our ability to listen fully what is being said. This is similar to making judgments and drawing conclusions before all has been said. Don't do that. Take it at its face value and go with the flow.

They say that most people do complete and total career changes at least once, often twice in their lifetimes. Very few people chose the ideal perfect career for themselves when they are in high school and blissfully happily work those same jobs for the rest of their lives. With the way that technology and everything else changes so fast, I think it is ridiculous to expect to stay in one job from the time you leave school until you retire. Even staying in the same company can be a huge challenge. So how will you pick your first career? Your next major career change?

The first thing I want you to look at is what kinds of things do you enjoy doing and what you are naturally good at. Imagine that you just won the lottery and you will never have to work again for another day of your life. How would you spend your time? After the shopping sprees and traveling and such grows old, you are going to have to fill your days up doing something so that you are not bored out of your mind. What would you do? What would consume your attention if you could freely bury yourself in it? Is there a way to make a living at that now? Is there a way to incorporate some of that into your current career? Could you begin doing it now as a hobby and grow it into a second income and eventually quit your ‘real job’ to play full-time at your new hobby/career?

You obviously have to look at practicality issues. Truth be known my very favorite thing to do is drive convertibles and suntan at the beach. That’s not likely going to ever become a career and it sure as heck isn’t going to pay my bills! You have to look at what you like to do and take a realistic look at whether the market is ever going to pay you an income for doing it. Just because you love doing something does not mean that the world is going to love giving you money for doing it. There are plenty of musicians and artists out there who cannot earn enough to support themselves. It takes more then just a love of your work. Pick a number of different things that you love and narrow the list down by deciding which ones would realistically finance you at the level that you require.

Another thing to consider, especially when you are choosing your first job is how much education or special training is required. How many kids think that because they love to play basketball that they will be the next Michael Jordan? How many put in the kind of work and practice that he did? If you want to be a doctor, then you had better seriously contemplate the years of college and the extremely high cost of going to medical school. Down the road, a lot of the experience you get in one career can be transferred to your next career. Customer service skills that you learn while waiting tables will still serve you later when you are an entrepreneur. If you have a lot of the skills from previous work experience, but not all of them, then you have to figure out how to finance going to night school or whatever else you need to do to change careers. Additional education and skills should not stop you from changing to a great job that you know you will love, but you do need to take it into serious consideration while making the choice.

Many of the community colleges have some cool placement tests that tell you what kinds of work you would be happy doing. They ask you a bunch of multiple choice questions like if you would rather work indoors or outside. Do you want to travel as part of your career or stay home? How much weight are you willing to lift? How introverted or extroverted are you? How much money do you want to make? After you answer these questions and a bunch more, the computer system spits out a list of careers that you would be suited to. Keep in mind that what interested you at twenty is not likely to be the same as what interests you at forty. I would think that you could do an online search and find some of those tests online. These will give you some ideas you may have never considered. I remember taking one when I was in my early twenties and I ranked extremely high at “Clergy.” I laughed and thought that was the stupidest thing I had ever heard of. I wanted to be a motivational speaker and it took me a couple of days before I realized that it is a very similar job description. Whether I am telling you about God or I am telling you how to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, it’s the same skills and many of the same daily tasks. I am preaching a different topic, but I am still up on my soapbox telling you what to do and telling you how to live, aren’t I? So, be open-minded to what the test results show.

So, start out by brainstorming ideas of things that you would love to do if money was not an issue. Then add to it the results of one of those placement tests. Take the ideas from those two exercises and start looking at the practicalities of marketability and how much education and training are necessary. If you can find a way to do what you love and make a living at it, then you have got the key ingredients to creating a life of abundance and prosperity that the rest of the world only dreams of. You do not have to stay with something just because you used to love it and now you make a lot of money doing it. If you are bored and ready for something new, then start dreaming and planning your next adventure.

These are the same people who have huge apartments overlooking skylines and plenty of time to hang out with friends. Their jobs have unbelievably flexible hours. In real life, however, every job you take, no matter how big or small, finds you stressed out once in a while. Whether you're dealing with an endless line of customers, a demanding executive, an uncertain economy or a childish students, anxiety will find you. It's just part of life. Some jobs have more stress than others. That's not to say they're bad jobs, they just require people who are strong enough to handle the increased stress that comes their way. Teacher is one of high stress job in this world that need people who strong enough to handle all those kind of students from several of background.

Therefore, we as future teachers should be ready and been well-prepared with all those things so that we will not end up with feeling of frustrations or regret being in this career in the future.

1. Retail Salespersons

Why: Jobs in sales require you to convince customers to spend money. Customers don't necessarily want to spend money and even if they do, they have a variety of places to shop. Salespeople have to prove their merchandise is the best option. If that weren't stressful enough, retail compensation is often commission-based, which means your paycheck is tied to how much you sell.

2. Doctors and nurses

Why: Doctors and nurses deal with life and death on a regular basis, a pressure found in few occupations. They have to handle patients while accessing an encyclopedia of medical knowledge. Doctors and nurses who work in hospitals or clinics that don't keep regular business hours often work on little sleep and are on call even on days off. In recent years doctors have also been forced to deal with an increase in malpractice lawsuits.

3. Accountants

Why: Crunching numbers requires attention to detail that can make your eyes cross. Not only are you dealing with a client's finances, but you also have to take into account volumes of rules and regulations that change each year. Plus, you're expected to know about minute loopholes and read tiny print that nobody else does.

4. Teachers
Why: Students aren't always easy to control or motivate. Parents who can't understand why their children aren't doing better often place the blame with teachers. And pressure to prepare students for standardized tests mean they can't always stick to the lesson plans they'd prefer to teach.

5. Firefighters

Why: When firefighters are on call, they've got to be ready to respond to emergencies that range from minor car accidents to huge explosions. They might go an entire shift with no emergency or they might get a call that keeps them out for hours. Perhaps most importantly, they're playing with fire literally. That's stressful enough.

6. Farmers

Why: Agriculture requires constant attention, from waking up early to strenuous physical activity. That alone isn't stressful, but having no control over nature is. Droughts, floods, fires or other natural disasters can ruin months of hard work, and you can't do much about it.

In our previous class, dr siraje had already shared with us about people who are quitting from university or course is not the failure student but they also can be a success people although they not finish their study. Actually there are a reason why people quitting from their course. Maybe sometimes, people see that there are more opportunities outside rather than they continue study in the university level. There are proof that support my opinion whereby there lots of success people becomes very rich such as Bill Gates although they didn’t further their study until finished. I’m personally believed that there are major reasons that make peoples quit from a study course. It’s maybe the person lose interest in the subject or the subject becomes too difficult.

From what I had read in the study_habit blog, there are one author that write “if you don’t like it or if you feel it’s wrong for you; then just quit it. It’s here that things get a little difficult, you should keep on until you reach your goals, no matter how much effort it takes. But, if you know you can’t continue, what you can do is firstly seek an advice from wise people who know about your affairs before you decide to quit a course. The person you asking must have a genuine interest in your well being, don’t ask someone who doesn’t really care what happens in your life. That’s why asking close relatives could be a real goldmine. You also can write down in white piece of paper and write down about both positive and negative that could happen if you decide to quit. Write them down on two different columns and notice which one outweighs the other." So, whatever we want to do, make some analysis first before you make an actions so that you will not regret in the future. And don't ever think that if people quit from study, he or she is a failure person because maybe they will be more success than us in the future.

I'm just want to share with all of you....From my own experience in my secondary school, my schools counselor didn’t give proper guidance to us about the career information. In schools, my friends and I being forced by schools to enter science stream class when we are in Form 4 without being showed with educational options that we all have. In my opinion, my schools counselor didn’t play good roles in guiding the students exploring interest and personality as what i'm learning now in my counseling course. What we just know, they are streaming us by referring to our grade in PMR results. I think that’s not true actions because academic qualification or grade is not the main referral for schools to streaming the students. They should identify student interest first and analyzed whether the student are capable or not to do that course. It is very important to know the result because to fit the student with the thing that they capable to do is quite important so that the students will not facing any problems in the future. During my study time, I’m having some problems whereby I can’t cope with the science subject because I’m not interested in science field. My ambition since primary school is actually to be teacher and I didn’t expect that I will be in the sciences field. I still continue it after get some advice from friends and also my family. But after I’m finished my study at secondary schools, I get an offers to do HND program in Business. I grab the opportunities although I didn’t get the education program because of my sciences result in SPM are not excellent. At first, I’m very frustrated with that but I’m thinking that’s maybe my destiny for this journey. But alhamdulillah, now I’m being in Education program after striving for almost 4 years to enter to this program. What I really hope, hopefully there will no students will be like us in the future so that there will no people doing the jobs that they are not interested. As future school counselor, I will try the best to give proper guidance in career planning and development to my students so that they will know what they want and they will get what they strive.

1. Make some Research
Ask colleagues, friends, and faculty about the organization, and about any personal contacts at the organization they might have. Look at the organization's home page. Knowing about the job will help you prepare a list of your qualifications so that you can show, point by point, why you are the best candidate.
2. Practice, practice, practice
Prepare a succinct, clear answer to each of the questions in the interview questions section. Practice answering questions with a friend, or in front of a mirror. Ask your friend to give you constructive criticism on your speaking style, mannerisms, and poise.
3. Be prompt and professional
Always arrive early. If you don't know where the organization is located, call for exact directions in advance. Leave some extra time for any traffic, parking, or unpredictable events. The best time to arrive is approximately 5 - 10 minutes early. Give yourself the time to read your résumé one more time, to catch your breath, and to be ready for the interview.
4. Dress for success
Wear a professional formal suit. This point cannot be emphasized enough. First impressions are extremely important in the interview process. It is also important that you feel comfortable.
5. Be organized
Carry a portfolio notepad or at the very least a manila file folder labeled with the employer's name. Bring extra résumés and have the names, addresses and phone numbers of references, in case the employer asks. Also, bring a list of questions for the employer. You may refer to your list of questions to be sure you've gathered the information you need to make a decision.
6. Know yourself
You will make the interview process easier for the employer if you volunteer relevant information about yourself. Think about how you want to present your strengths, experiences, education, work style, skills, and goals. Be prepared to supplement all your answers with examples that support the statements you make. Think about how you can answer difficult questions accurately and positively, while keeping each answer brief.
7. Show your interest
You should let the interviewer see that you are interested in that positions
8. Be honest
An interview gives the employer a chance to get to know you. While you do want to market yourself to the employer, answer each question with an honest response.
9. Be positive
Always think of something positive about an experience and talk about that. You should also be enthusiastic. If you are genuinely interested in the job, let the interviewer know that.

Education Graduated Student Dilemma...
A long time a go, when I was a school student, everybody told me that its good to take an education course. The reason is that we'll be hired by government and the job is waiting for those graduated from education course. All we have to think is, which school that we will be posted just after we finish the course.
Nowadays, these statement is no longer relevant anymore.Since there are no contract between the students and Ministry of Education, all the Education Graduated Student will facing the similar problem with the other course students. We have to seek for the employment, preparing the resume and we have to attend in a number of interviews maybe...
Is it hard to be a 'Cikgu'?Huh..
Almost every Education Graduated Student wish to get hired by the Ministry of Education. Its good to be a school teacher. We'll gain more experience before we further our next step in our career. But that is not the most important thing that we to care about. We have to realize about that and prepare ourself and learn to 'sell ourself' to get hired from any employer.
Someone told me that we have to be creative and try do something better like build up a firm or something else that maybe will make us pleasure and satisfaction even more salary than to be a school teacher maybe. Insya-Allah there's a chance for us to get employed.

Are There Advantages to Job Hopping for Employees and Employers?

My dear classmate and Dr Siraje, Here i would like to share an interesting article that give me new perception about job hopping issue. It is written by a woman, so enjoy it:

As an employer answering the question of what is job hopping I would have to say if you didn't stick with a job for at least a year you are a job hopper. If someone gave me a resume with a different job every year on a continuous basis for two to three years I wouldn't hire them. I would know they wouldn't stay with my company either. Employers, especially small companies, do not like to see job hopping on a resume. A lot of the bigger companies that do temporary to permanent hiring will be more likely to hire you compared to a small company that wants to fill a position.

As an employee a job hopper is someone that hops jobs every six months, even though employers see it differently. As an employee I know changing jobs is sometimes the only way to get more money, better benefits, vacation, or just an environmental improvement. As an employee you can say if the employers would be honest and have better working environments you would stay. If you are a job hopper, instead of listing every single job you have had in the past year or two, as long as they are in the same field, you could put them in one category on your resume as Temporary positions without listing individual companies and list how long you have been in the temporary job market. For example, my husband had a run of bad luck about three years ago. He worked for several different plants within two years. These plants were also always hiring temporary to permanent positions. So on his resume it looked something like this:Temporary Positions Feb. 2004-Mar. 2006. Worked in various plants, forklift operator, packer, handler, shipping, receiving, etc.

The advantage to job hopping for an employer is seeing you have knowledge in different areas. Showing you can handle multi-type jobs is also a positive. It takes four years to get a degree to show you are capable of learning. Job hopping can show you are capable of learning different jobs in a matter of a year or two. You do however, need to give those jobs notice and be in good standing with them, so your future employer will see you left for your own personal reasons, whatever they might be.
