Soft Skills and Students
I think Malaysia educational system did noy much developing and polishing sof-skill in their students which tt will bring some problems when they need to find a job for example they need to undergo an job interview which soft-skill is very vital.
To counter this issues
Some of the institutions today have started to offer soft skill programs for graduating students but these are mostly done on ad hoc basis to counter the unemployment problem.
For this polishing class, emphasis will be given on the soft skills, mastery of English language, interpersonal ability, leadership and others which are often sought after in a promising employee. On top of that, entrepreneurship values will also be instilled among the graduates to open up the possibility of venturing in their own business.

Choosy Job Seekers
In past 20 years, I can say that many graduated students are not choosy in finding a job.But how different it is today. Nowadays, candidates are expecting job offer to come with a package – a good pay, convenient working location, no shift, no work beyond 6pm and so on, with everything handed in a silver platter. I think they are so pampered students and the rather have no job than got a hard job
Academic Achivement Has Little Do In Job?
From my own experience with senior graduates – not once, but many times – has convinced me that today’s academic achievement has little to do with how well you can excel in the working world. I used to be short listing 4-5 first class graduates for an interview and in the end rejected them all, and hired a second class student instead. It seems that the country is blessed with institutions highly capable to produce low quality, academic achievers. This statement may not bode well with some of the institutions out there but this should be taken as a challenge, not a mockery.
Economy Factor Bring Unemployment
From what i just found.I want to tell you all that economic structure has changed.Nowdays the economic mostly change into service sector with requires people who do not only possess the right technical knowledge, but also those who possess the right soft skills It leads to unemployment to the engineering students which is so many wainting for the job.In addition, unlike the manufacturing sector, a company providing services would not require a large number of staff to be employed.Statisticshow that between 2006 and 2007, the country’s manufacturing employment grew by 3%, from 3.244 million workers, to 3.347 million. The business services sector employment, on the other hand grew by 2.6%, from 0.771 million, to 0.791 million.

“Song BILA IZRAIL DATANG MEMANGGIL” VS “CULTIVATE SEED ON THE LAST DAY”
Dr. Siraje suddenly asked us: “What will you do if you know that tomorrow is the day of Qiamat?”. Many students responded in several answer, until Hasrina said she will do teaching since she loves teaching. Suddenly Dr. Siraje concluded the discussion with the hadith that Rasulullah told a companion to CULTIVATE SEED IN YOUR HAND EVEN THOUGH YOU KNOW TORMMOROW IS GOING TO BE END OF THE DAY. The message is clear, to be productive until the last of your breath! This is a true concept of “AWARE OF DEATH AND PREPARE FOR IT” as mentioned by Rasulullah in another hadith.
However, in Malaysia, during the time around 1980’s, there was a popular a nasyid song titled “BILA IZRAIL DATANG MEMANGGIL” (WHEN ANGEL OF IZRAIL IS CALLING). In this song, it contains message that people will shiver when Izrail comes and imagination of how the death is. Nevertheless, government has banned this song by reason that it is related to Al-Arqam group, but what I heard from old people, they said Tun Mahathir actually does not like this song since it influence our workers to become scare of death which finally make their determination to live become lower and not productive. In order to encourage people to be productive, they banned this song.
I do not know should agree with the action or not, but what I think is, when think about my death is coming, supposedly I should do the best for sake of my pride to die with the best achievement is in memory of my life. I might not agree with those who only prepare for the hereafter while talking about death, and totally neglect the worldly matters. The preparation should be balance because we have to bear in mind, while we are working, it is also considered as ibadah since we are struggling to fulfill the needs of our children and other family members too. By fulfilling our responsibilities towards others, it is also an ibadah and this thing is related to the hereafter life in order to get rewards from Allah. Hence, open our mind when think about DEATH. “BE OPTIMIST AND PRODUCTIVE, DON’T BE PESSIMIST AND PASSIVE!”

CULTURE INFLUENCE IN CAREER WORLD
CULTURE INFLUENCE IN CAREER WORLD
Dr. Siraje has said during our class: “In Malaysia, we can see women become a bus driver, but ladies, if you stay in Saudi Arabia, for example, you cannot dream of being a bus driver”.
This is a statement of him which reflects the culture influence in career world in a country. A country like Malaysia absolutely gives a great and almost equal chance to women to go for work at outside. However, in certain countries, like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, it is very rare to see women working outside. Even if they are working, basically they only do type of work which can be done in their house compound or in places where they do not mix with male. For instance, they do sewing, which suitable to be done in their own houses. This condition is due to the restrictions they have in culture they value. However, the advantage of implementing such policy in their country, even though women cannot freely get the equal chance to enter professional fields as male, the crime rates in certain Arabs countries are very low. This is totally different compared to Malaysia, where women conquer the career world, which leads to many male jobless or disqualified to get a better positions, where finally males who are desperate to fulfill needs of life will do crimes that involved violations against women, such as snatching, raping, and so on.
Another issue in cultural influence is how people value a “gender dominated“ career determines the job market of the profession. For instance, in comparison of Malaysia and United States of America, it is hard to see men become nurse at hospital in Malaysia, but in their country, as shown in a medical TV series programme, ER, it is a common phenomenon men become nurse. Therefore, by having perception that nursing is a women’s profession, male in Malaysia tend to look for other job where finally influence job market demands in other profession, whereas in United States of America, the job market for nursing is attract attention from both gender, male and female. In conclusion, it is clear that CULTURE HAVE INFLUENCE IN CAREER WORLD.

“BECOME CRAZY” + “DO WHAT YOU LIKE” = SUCCESS IN CAREER
During class, Dr. Siraje sometimes keeps on repeating to tell us the story of Gallileo, the person who brought new perspective to people at his time, which the world is spherical, not flat, was jailed since people assuming he was crazy. Nevertheless, what I can see, Dr. Siraje highlighted this point is to make us realize persons who can generate ideas, who can contribute or exploring something new or able to produce something extraordinary, might be the successful people in their career. Besides, Dr. Siraje sometimes say “Do what you like, money will come later” in order to encourage us to enjoy our career world or to make our hobby as our job, where many people in this world are getting profit by commercialized their hobby. We can see in world history, only those who contribute something new or i.e. those who had done innovations, are those who we remembered until now, while some of them become among richest men in the world. Mostly, they satisfied and enjoyed doing what they like. For instance, Thomas Edison devoted his life for trying to invent a bulb. Even though he failed many times, he enjoyed doing it since it was his determination and interest to do research on it. In this case, we can see how Thomas Edison did what he like the most, and the result of it is he got satisfaction and become remembered until today for being the inventor. In other case, we can see how Bill Gates quit from his study since he wanted to focus on what he wants and what he likes, where finally he becomes one of richest men in United States of America. Hence, it is not exaggerating to say, to certain extents: “BECOME CRAZY” + “DO WHAT WE LIKE” = SUCCESS IN CAREER

We have learned lots of things from the interview and got some clear picture about the career development planning. Furthermore, what we have learned in class is just a piece of onion layer and totally different in workplace. We need to explore and learn from others to suit ourselves with the job at the first place. Therefore, in order to become a successful and a career person we need some extra- ordinary effort. Besides, it is not easy to become a successful person because it needs lot of scarification and difficulties we have to face.

Top 10: Interview Mistakes
Most of the time, potential job candidates are not aware of the mistakes they make before and during the interview. These small mistakes that might cost them a job.
1-Money Talk
Never bring up talk on salary at the beginning of the interview. Only talk about salary or your employment package, i.e. remuneration, benefits, etc. when the interviewer asks you or the matter has not been brought up and the interview is near its end.
2-Failing to Ask Questions
Ask questions to show that you are interested in the job, lack of enthusiasm is a killer of your chances of employment.
3-Lying or Concealing Information
Never attempt to lie or cover up any vital information, no matter how important you thought it was for you to conceal the information. You may land the job but how long it will be before you are found out?
4-Criticising or Slating Your Previous Employers/Company/Colleagues or Complaining About Your Day
No one likes a person who complains, keep in mind that it is not a recommended icebreaker. You are being interviewed to promote yourself as the best possible candidate for the post, not to criticise others or complain about the train/car that broke down on your way to the interview.
5-Body Language
Avoid weak or too strong handshakes, minimal or almost no eye contact with the interviewer and slouching when seated. Keep a straight back when seated and refrain from fidgeting or shaking your legs, twitching your nose, biting your nails or other signs that showed your nervousness. Take a deep breath to remain calm and be aware of your body language. Your body language tells your interviewers more about you than your speech.
6-Inappropriate Dressing
Avoid revealing clothes or being underdressed - stick to conventional dressing, i.e. mono colours and minimal accessories.
7-Talking Too Much
It is not wise to talk too much and fail to listen and understand the questions asked. Listen carefully to answer the questions asked, be clear and concise in your answers to show that you understood the question and are not just rambling for the sake of talking. Be specific and respond directly to the questions asked. Be careful with your selection of words and think before you say anything to decide if what you are going to say is necessary or appropriate.
8-Lack of Confidence/Over Confidence
Lack of confidence could be perceived by potential employers as your lack of preparation; being nervous could also be giving the impression that you are trying to cover something or is lying. Being over confident may turn interviewers off as you may be viewed as being too big-headed or you may be viewed as a braggart who talks more than you deliver.
9-Lack of Preparation
Preparation for an interview includes:
Research on the background of the company
Bring along an extra copy of your resumé and relevant supporting documents, just in case
Rehearse on your speech, clarity, confidence, etc. prior to the interview
Be prepared with the answers for possible common interview questions
It is recommended that you carry an extra copy of your resumé in your working bag just in case you are called for a job interview during your lunch/tea break at short notice.
10-Running Late Without Notice.
Of course, the worst that could happen which could quash your employment chances is your attitude when you do not even bother to turn up at an interview without calling.
Turning up late for the interview and never calling to say you are running late will not give a good impression to your potential employer. If you are running late, do inform your interviewer and apologize that you are running late and ask if it is possible for you to attend the interview a little bit late or just request for the interview to be rescheduled if that is not possible.

How to Use Non Verbal Communication to Market Yourself
Everyone knows how important it is to speak confidently, say the right things and show interest when being interviewed or even at a meeting with clients. However, in addition to what you say, one must know that what you do also communicates volumes of information about who you really are.
Experts believe that a large part of communication occurs non-verbally. That means that even a smile on your face and the firmness of your handshake when you say, "Pleased to meet you," says more than your words alone.
Tips on How to Make a Positive Impression Non-Verbally
Remember that everything you do creates an impression:
your facial expressions
the "look in your eyes"
your eye contact (or lack of it)
your hand gestures
your posture
the way you comb your hair
the clothes (even the shoes) you wear
Making an Entrance
When entering someone's office, do not poke your head in the door. Walk in confidently. (Knock first, if appropriate)
A strong stride, a direct approach, an upright posture and a sense of energy are extremely important
Body Language
Whether talking with one person or an auditorium full of people, maintain eye contact. Otherwise the person or crowd you are addressing will definitely show no interest to what you have to say
Keep your facial expressions relaxed and friendly. The idea is to keep the listener interested and comfortable with you and what you have to say
When standing, maintain a balance to your stance. Do not slouch, or lean on things when talking to people. Always maintain an upright posture
Move purposefully; it shows confidence. Do not walk into a room for instance as though you are about to steal something or as though you do not belong there
Let your hands fall to your side after using them and avoid crossing your arms, or holding your own hands either in front of you or behind your back
Shaking Hands
Involve your entire hand in the handshake. Make eye contact; without it a handshake is half as effective

Learn How To Be A Good Listener, Listening Skills Show Respect To The Speaker
Have you ever been in a middle of an interview or even in a conversation in that matter, when the person you are talking to just gets up and walks away? Or fiddles in the chair? Or even looks everywhere but at you? How does this make you feel? Most people feel hurt. The listener acts as though he or she is absolutely not interest in what the speaker has to say or already said. And yet, when it is their turn to talk, they expect, if not demand, attention.
Have you ever been in a heated conversation and realize that your partner has no idea what you have been saying? It could very well be the manner that you are delivering the argument or speech, or it may even be that your partner is a poor listener. Poor listening skills seem to be the majority and not the minority of fresh graduates. So how can one learn to be a good listener? Below are some common tips that can help poor listeners work wonders in all situations not only during interviews.
Learn to listen by using lots of eye contact:Let the speaker know that you are interested in what is being said
Be slow to speak:Sometimes, people speak to think out loud. Sometimes, all they really want is a shoulder to lean on and a willing ear to listen. By being slow to speak, you are allowing the speaker to work out or solve problems themselves. Also, one must think before he/she speaks
Keep the secret:People trust you with information because they believe that you will not gossip and spread slander. Keep their trust by keeping things private; between the two of you
Be Attentive:Learn to actively listen. Let the speaker know that you are actually listening, although you are not speaking, by saying things like, "yeah, hmmm, I know, that's true, okay, that makes sense," and so forth. This shows that you are in tune with what they are saying and also following what they are saying
Show Gratitude:Let the speaker know that you feel honored that they were able to open up to you. If nothing personal was said, than let the speaker know that you had a great time listening and that you learned a lot. In a society that forgets to show gratitude, a simple use of kind words, can make someone's day a little brighter. Showing kindness and appreciation will also help you with the interviewer
Stay in Tune:Do not simply disappear in the middle of any conversation because your mind wandered. Whether you actually get up and walk away or let your mind wander elsewhere, it is just being plain rude. If you find that your attention span is small, actively repeat what is being said to you as the speaker is speaking

6 Strategies for Switching Career Tracks
Before you make your move, you should evaluate your options carefully. Here are some strategies to help you make a smoother transition from your current career into a different one:
Number 1
Look for opportunities closer to home
If you’re not ready to make a big leap to another company in another industry, find out if there might be opportunities to learn different skills in the organisation in which you currently work. You’ll already know the culture, will be able to use the organisational knowledge that you already have, and will learn new skills that you can take with you when you decide to leave for greener pastures in the future.
Number 2
Go back to school
Take courses that are related to the new field to both increase your qualification and to get a feel for the field. Plenty of colleges and universities offer “open” courses, where you can study for certification, a diploma or even a degree in the comfort of your home. (Be sure to check their accreditations first.)
Number 3
Retrofit your resume
Write a good resume to highlight skills you already have that will be useful in your new career. Study job advertisements for the career you plan to change to, and note which of your current skills can match up with the "wish list" of recruiters for those jobs. Project management, problem solving, effective leadership, hiring and training are all skills that can be successfully transferred. Shift the focus of your accomplishments to give credibility to those skills and prove your ability to cross industry or occupational lines. Needless to say, don’t be tempted to list skills or experience that you don’t actually have. Lying can be disastrous for your career change and can be all too easily exposed with a simple reference check.
Number 4
See a career counselor
Career counseling may sound like something only college students would need, but counseling is available for experienced workers of all levels. Do not be intimidated to meet with a counselor, even if you are forty years old. In fact, career counselors are used to dealing with older clients. They exist for one reason: to help you identify your ideal career. While counseling may not help you pinpoint a new career path, it will help you gain more insight about your interests and what you can accomplish from there.
Number 5
Go moonlighting
Get a feel of the industry you plan to join by “moonlighting” in that industry on a part-time or volunteer basis, just to get to know the culture and the people. For example, if you are an architect who is eager to become a travel writer, start out by volunteering to write for your organization’s newsletter and slowly but surely make the transition into travel writing. You will then have a better idea if this is the right move for you, and also add solid experience points to your resume.
Number 6
Have a safety net just in case
Are you willing to earn less just because you want to try something new? Are you willing to relocate? Make sure you’re financially set up to take care of bills, rent and basic necessities if the new position doesn’t work out for some reason. If you find yourself in a desperate position, you may be forced to take the first offer that comes along – and find yourself right back at square one.
Conclusion
Changing careers may seem like a daunting task. Your friends and family may advise you that you’ve lost your mind; employers in your new field may question your lack of experience; and you may find yourself doubting your own ability to make the change. But if you truly feel that you could flourish in a different field, don’t be discouraged! The field that you chose when you first entered the working world does not have to be the one you retire from.

Why?
I think Malaysian students they are very lack of occupational exposure.I think they only have much info about teacher occupation because everyday they meet their teachers. When I in my secondary just know about occupational scope that related to my family members.I just know what the job title they are and what the are doing.I think in Malaysian education there are no subject that give much information about occupation and career development that which is very importance to them.As a future counselor we should curb this problem.Thank you
Must Have
I just find from O'Net that school counselors should have these skills:
Oral Expression — The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
Oral Comprehension — The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
Problem Sensitivity — The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
Speech Clarity — The ability to speak clearly so others can understand you
Inductive Reasoning — The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
Written Expression — The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand. Deductive Reasoning — The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
Speech Recognition — The ability to identify and understand the speech of another person. Written Comprehension — The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing. Near Vision — The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
So my dear friends let polishing up our skills....

Introduce you, Frank Parson
Frank Parsons is known as the Father of Vocational Guidance.
Parsons developed a framework to help individuals decide on a career. This framework contained a three part formulation.
First, a clear understanding of yourself, aptitudes, abilities, interests, resources, limitations, and other qualities
Second, a knowledge of the requirements and conditions of success, advantages and disadvantages, compensations, opportunities, and prospects in different lines of work
Third, true reasoning of the relations of these two groups of facts (Parsons, 1909, p. 5, as cited in Zunker, 2002)

clear vision in life=success
Salam..
I just want to share my opinion on this.. I believe that vision and mission in life is so important the life of every people.. It is the law of the nature.."You will get back what you give".. When you have the clear vision and mission on it, you are near to the successful..
The example like what DR. Siraje told us in the previous class is Bill Gates. He is very clear with he wants to achieve in his life..At the same time, he also knows the ways and the steps on how to achieve it.. I really proud of him altough at the beginning, people around him always condemned him due to what he did..He drop out from the university and resigned from the job that he already have..
For me, we can use him as the role model and the way he faced the stress from the people around him was really useful for us..-who always being the victim from the people who never satisfy or understand ourself..

interest is more important!
we have heard before that so many ppl outside doing job in differnt field of work and is contradict with their qualification..
this is no longer a big issue right now..
what i want to say is that for me interest and satisfaction is the priority in career..
its not a problem for me if a person want to choose their career contrast with their qualification ..as lomg as they feel happy doing that job..its okay..
'' do what u love and embrace each moment with enthusiasm'' =)

id u ever heard about the most famous internet millionaire-IRFAN KHAIRI?
Just because of interest, he becomes the millionaire. He deserves and start for it from the home.. This is what the people want, staying at home, spending a lot of time with the family but the income increase from day to day..
Many people follow his steps and become successful just like him..We cannot consider that the people who have the CAREER is somone who sit at the office, receive the income for every month and have the degree from the university nowadays..
Meaning that, as long you have the deep interest on something where it can serve the need of society, you can be the rich people as well..
#educATION is not everything..

can we do like that???
as we learn in class, the western system of education in their school in trained their student to be exposed in school is very much sophisticated than in malaysia..
but the question is can we do the same as them?
em for me.. it is not imposibble..as long as we be are willing to make an extra effort to do like them..what is more important is the quality of the education itself.. '' whatever man conceive,he can achieve'' =)

the contract with KPM..
in my opinion, to have contract with KPM is better for some reasons..
maybe for some people, they belive that to have contract is difficult and it is juz like 'makan gaji' for ur whole life until the end..
but for me i prefer to have guaranteed in my job rather than any reason..
i think it is more important than anything else..to further study is other matter..we still can further study in the future .. no one can stop u if u wan to improve ur knowledge.. but this is very subjective thing.. every ppl are free to have their own view on this ... thats all..wassalam.. =)

from our last class reflection, for me that is very interesting where we can know ourselves and can know what are the best for us to be in future.. so, that is the best way to us to implement it to our future students in order to know their ability and their interest in what they wanted to be. so, as a counselor we can know what type of students we able to produce..am i rite??

We Are Free To ChooSe Our Destiny....
The responsibility for finding our Destiny is ours alone. It can never be given to us by anyone else for it doesn't belong to them, it only belongs to us.
Destiny is something we choose to go after.... Fate is something that happens to us, and seemingly takes away our choices, but in fact actually leads us back towards the choice of Destiny we already made before we were born.
It is believed by many that before we are born we make definite choices as to what we wish to learn, and the aim we want to fulfill during the coming life. It is a Spiritual decision which is rarely remembered once we are born, but in hindsight we often see that events and circumstances have led us unknowingly onwards towards our chosen destination.

I interested in sis Shakirah's story. Same goes to sis Aisyah's story. We always dream to get something and we think that it is the best for us. But Allah knows the best. I have the same experience just like both of you. I want to be a teacher since I am in primary school. I try for a few times but I am fail. After my SPM I miss an oppurtunity to be a teacher because of the date line is already finish. Then, I continue my study in form 6 because I am frustrated with my SPM. Besides, I want to beat my friends and be at par with them. I am notice that the form 6 is only for 1 and a half years while diploma is for 3 years. I did not want to take a long time and use a big amount of loan and as a result be in form 6. Before that, I am the sciences student but after a few month I make a decision to be in human sciences. I love being a sciences student but I know my capability. At the begining I can not concerntrate with my study but when Iam in upper 6 I really realize that this is the only chance for me. Alhamdulillah, I got flying colour result after facing a long journey. I am very happy and during I am fill up the form of UPU I am choose to be in education field. But once again, I miss my MEDSI test and I know that it is hard to be in this field. But I remind myself that one day I still want to be in this field. I get an offer to be in IRKHS at IIUM. I come here and try to accept it. But, during the ta'aruf week I get a chance to convert in education. I am just fill up the form and one day I get a call to go for MEDSI. After the MEDSI test I go for the interview and during the interview session I can not control my emotion and I am cry in front of the interviewer. But I am try my best to answer their question and always pray that my dream be real realm. At the end, I got a call that inform me to get my offer letter to join INSTED from A&R. And now I am happy with what I am doing. May Allah helps me to do, to be and to give the best. May Allah bless all of us and guide us in our live.

A long journey....
Dear sis aisyah, I have read your post; if you fail in interview, what you will do… I also have same experiences with you but in my story, it’s quite complicated than you are. Juz want to share with you, I want to be a teacher since I’m in primary schools. That’s my ambition since at early age because many of my family members are teachers including my dad. From that, I inspired to be like them, teaching for the nation.
After the SPM result, I applied for education in TESL, and I was called for an interview but I’m failed to get the offer. I’m quite sad but I’m still continuing my journey in seeking knowledge. Then I got an offered to study HND in Business field. I accept that offered because I don’t want to study in Form 6. It is because in form 6, it quite tough and I don’t want to face it because at that time, I know that I can’t do it. So, I choose to be in KPM, studying business course and at there student were sponsored by MARA. So, I do not have to worry about loan or what I need to pay after I graduated from there. I’m just concentrated my study until I’m graduated from that place.
After doing my Diploma, I work for a while. And after that I apply for ISMP, the program that we are in now. And I was called for an interview in MEDSI test, I pass the test, and I was called for an interview. In that interview session, I did the best as well as I can but unfortunately I didn’t pass in that interview also. I’m still remembering there are one interviewer who is a woman is very strict and fierce. She always critiques on my answer in the interview sessions. I’m feeling quite sad because I think I already give the best but I’m still didn’t get it. Sometimes, I think…maybe it is fate that I will not be a teacher forever…but my dad always give me support not to give up before strive on. I got an offer to study in Degree in business field. I took that opportunity although I didn’t get what the most I want. I’m still accepting it because business is main second interest. I told to myself that, I will finish my degree there and I will take KPLI program after that in order to be a teacher. That’s really show my interest to teach the students is very deeper. I also never want to give up until I have been given the opportunity. Therefore, I study in UITM for 6 month and at the same time I didn’t give up at all. I apply for ISMP for second time and for this time I passed in the interview session. I’m quit from UITM and I enter to this IIUM.
I’m very happy with that.. At last, my ambition to be a teacher will been realized on in next coming years. What I love to do will become my career in the future. I will study hard to make sure that an opportunity that given to me will been used as well as I can. Insyaallah... So, my advice to all my friends, if you love to do one things, do until you get it…never ever give up before you try…. Gud Luck to all of you…. (",)
Sharing a life story....
Salam,
I would like to share my working experience to all of you. As for your information, before I enter to this IIUM, there are long and exciting journeys that I had already face and gone through. I have a HND qualification in Business (Marketing) and before I enter to this field in counseling, I have been working with Petronas Fertilizer Kedah Sdn Bhd which is one of company under Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS). I have been working there for almost 7 month. Before that, I ‘m doing my practical there and I apply for the job placement before I finish my practical period at that place. Alhamdullilah, I was called for an interview and during my interview, my supervisor is one of the interviewers and I’m feeling very comfortable to give reaction and cooperation in this interview. At first they ask me about what my specialization, my interest, how I want to promote myself to that organization and why should they accept me as an employee. I try my best to answer that questions and alhamdulillah, I pass the interview. I have been offered a job position in Business Performance Improvement Section in Organizational Performance Improvement Department as Event Management. I’m enjoy with my job there, with a lot of experiences, meeting with many people around and throughout that working time, I gain many experiences and learn many beneficial skill that has helped much in building my personality now. One of that is my communication skill, before I involve in working environment, I didn’t have much exposure in dealing with people. When I work under PFK, I tend to learn the skill in order easy for me to deal with other people from my own boss. He is very friendly person and he’s quite knowledgeable. I’m quite impressed with him.
That’s job is very interesting but sometimes it needs my full energy and my fully focus to deliver the best to the organization. Sometimes, I always think, how I’m going to be when I had married in the future. Of course I cannot give my fully attention to my family because this job required me to go for an outstation and need my time until late night. Although I think in that way, I’m still enjoying my working life there until I got an offer to further my study in doing degree; I seek an opinion from my boss. He asks me to further my study to the degree level. i took his opinions as well in making my own decision. Actually i also had ever shared my interest in teaching with my seniors there including my boss. he also has ever asks to me whether teaching is my main interest. He just say that just do what you love, you will get satisfaction in that. That’s the word I still kept bear in mind until forever. By thinking to that, I leave my job that is very high paid salaries without thinking twice because I confirmed with my self. I want to be a teacher or school counselor, to give my services to people who needed and help my nation to achieve higher education in their life.

"is there any relation between what he was study and what did he doing now"... and he said..."There are no relation at all".I was going to his office in Bangi and I can see by myself that what he is doing now is something that he interested to.I can see his creativity in handling his editing of a television program.what we have to put when a program started, what we have to do to make the program achieve the objective and target in an attractive way.And when the program is finish, his name appear on television screen...
From the story that I share, the point is "Doing something that we interested to...Very exciting huh!"

If you were pressed to name the two most popular billionaire executives in technology, it would be hard to beat Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Gates became the country's wealthiest person by guiding Microsoft to its mastery of operating system software, while Jobs co-founded Apple Computer before staging a prodigal return to guide his company's spectacular turnaround. Sharp cookies? Absolutely. Yet both dropped out of college.
Others didn't even get that far. VirginAtlantic Airways chieftain and "rebel billionaire" Richard Branson didn't even make it through high school, while Wendy's founder Dave Thomas also cut his education short by immersing himself in various restaurant jobs when he was just 12 years old.
Ray Kroc, who turned a popular fast-food chain run by two brothers into the McDonald's empire that today reigns as the world's largest restaurant chain, also dropped out of high school. With Kroc and Thomas achieving such great heights in fast food with limited schooling, perhaps it shouldn't have come as much of a surprise to see the street smarts team win Trump's first challenge of the season when it took to marketing new sandwiches for Burger King.
Amazing aite?
During my school time, i told my mum that i want to stop going to school bcoz i gain nothing from it, juz keep bz playing around wit my friends. Suddenly, she scolded me.. huhu. Whatever...

Presentation. Bla..bla..bla...
Finally, we reach near the end of this class "Career Development" fuuhhh...
and for the previous claz, many of our friends come with good presentation about career review.. Congrats for them. :) after all those presentation, i hope we can gain much knowledge and get the wider view about world of work that we're going to face.
from the presentation, we know that when it comes to career, there are several skills that we need to possess gradually to make sure that we can cope with the environment of work especially people around us. i wont say that reading books is bad, to know all the theory that taught in da class is not good, but to be successful u re also need to prepare urself with self experience that i think more valuable than all knowledge that u can copy from books. these kind of experience might be unique which is differs from others. and the most important thing is to LEARN a lesson from that and use it in da future.
for example, there are person that are successful such as Radical Touch owner, presented by my friend. yes, no doubt, he had qualification (Bachelor watever...)but thats only a stepping stone for him to gain general knowledge, 1 piece of certificate and make friends and contacts. he then use the environment factors around him to set up a company that based on printing, photocopying without any loan and able to stand up till now. i agree that it sounds quite easy compared to others such as Trump's empire, Bill Gates softwares, and so on but i believe that without high skills in social and enterprising skills he wont able to make it. n this should be a good example for us.
finally, i dunno what am i trying to say.. just try to keep my post reach 10th.. and hope it worth it. babai... c u. n i think diz is the 9th post. wait for one more soon. tQ... :) gud lak 4 all!

Hi ct,yes I 'm agree with you.We need to learn knowledge with intention to enrich ourselves with 'ilm in line with what Allah command to us.Yes,I agreed that we as human beings an we are not perfect compared with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and we seek knowledge only for the credential which to get good quality of bachelor degree but we forgot our purpose of study. That's why, when Dr Siraje asked us about what we have learnt in our first year,we already forget. The reason is we memorize the knowledge only for examination purposes.I said like that because I want to remind myself. Then,to remind my friends. So,after knowing yourself,we can change which we should not do.Love all my friends for Allah.Forgive me...Take care(-_^).Wassalam.

Salam. The important of the counselors' roles in career development
If we want to be a great counselor in this planet earth, the counselors must make their students know themselves.Means, the counselors should find what are the interest of their students if the students have no mission in lives.I have one story that similar with Dr Siraje. One of my junior was a very intelligent student and got straight A’s in her SPM in 2005.But the problem was she do not know which specialization she want to further her study and even she don’t know what was her interest!!!.She said to my school counselor that she only concentrate at her study and study hard as what her parents wanted her to success in her examination.Means, she wanted to satisfy her parents’ need.Actually, her father is a science teacher in my school. My counselors was disappointed with her because she was the best student at that school but could not become a role model for her juniors because she has no mission in life. Then the counselor give counseling service to her and recently,I heard she is studying abroad and the counselor has done a very good job.
Career Education
The systematic attempt to influences the career development of students and adults through various types of educational strategies--including
- provision of occupational information
- infussion of career concepts into the academic curriculum
- offering of worksite-based experiences
- offering career planning courses
If you fail in the interview...what would you do?
I just want to reflect to what Dr Siraje said about if he be the interviewer,he would like to take someone who will try again and again if he or she fail to pass the interview to become a teacher. It shows that the person really interested to that job not only take it as granted.I would like to share my experience. My ambition since I was in primary school is teacher. The reason is I have one male teacher so was so kind to me and concern about me.Then after the SPM result came out,I applied for interview to become a teacher by BPG but I failed. Then,I enter to the matriculation of IIUM.Alhamdulillah after graduate from matriculation,I enter to the main campus of IIUM and I felt so glad when the INSTED offered the new intake students to change the course and join the INSTED.So,I was so excited and worried at that time because I know I was fail one time ago. Finally,Allah knows the best for me based on His own time…now I am a student of INSTED.If I don’t pass the interview,I will not give up,insyaAllah because I can feel my is educator’s profession. In addition, now I have new aim in my life that I want to become a lecturer. That is a true career for me because I keep move to up.

Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT)
Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT)
- Builds on the assumption that cognitive factors play an important role in career development and decision making
- Closely linked to Krumboltz's learning theory of career counseling
- Incorporates Bandura's triadic reciprocal model of causality
Triadic Reciprocal Model
- Relationship among goals, self efficacy, and outcome expectations is complex
- This occurs within the framework of causality comprised of:
- personal attributes
- external environmental factors
- overt behavior
*self efficacy: people's judgments of their capabilities to organize and execute courses of action required to attain designted types of performances.
VOLATILITY IN THE WORLD OF WORK
Career Self Management Skill
We should study hard and try to achieve higher level of education or certificates. In other words, we have to prepare ourselves with the knowledge and information so that we ready when we aapt a new world which is that we call as "work environment"
Informed and considered career decisions
Before decice any career that we want to choose,we have to realize of our interest, personality and value where what is the most we love to do. We won't regret for something that we loved..Is it...?

Career Decision Making
Career decision making is a dynamic and ongoing process where your knowledge of self, your values, interests, temperament, financial needs, physical work requirements or limitations, etc., the effects of past experiences, new information, and changes in your life situation and environment all intertwine.
It requires constant review of decisions already made and consideration of decisions yet to be made.
Good career decision making requires you to engage in a process that requires you to:
1. examine and recognize personal values
2. identify, gather, and use relevant information.
3. understand and use an effective strategy for converting information into action.
Each career decision is limited by what you are capable of now or in the future, by your ability to identify alternatives, and by what you are willing to do.
Skillful career decision making requires you to be focused, flexible and open to new learning.
The following guidelines and questions to keep in mind to help you with decision making.
1. Define the problem. State the real problem, not the surface problem. State the problem in specific terms, as a question.
2. State the goal clearly. What outcome do you want from this decision?
3. List the initial alternative solutions. Which are the safe ones? Which require risk? What are the outcomes of each solution?
4. Collect information and expand the list of alternatives. What kind of information do need? Where can you obtain it? Is it relevant to the problem? list additional solutions or options.
5. Compare several alternatives with what you know about yourself, your values, your commitments to others, your resources, and your constraints.
6. Take action on your choice. How can you implement your choice? What action can you take now? What action can you take later?
7. Review your choice periodically.
8. Take a new decision based on new situations.

Presentation
After I've done my presentation just now, i'm realize that the most important things for our career is "decision making".I found that the right decision making will give us satisfaction in our life..And, we have to analyze ourself what is the most thing that we love to do...?It is nice for us to when we know that what we've decided is the best things that we've done..however,dont forget about factors that may influence the career development of ours across the lifespan..

Teenager Makes $1 Million A Year Giving Away Free Stuff
Assalaam alaikum. Here's the story I shared in class....
Ashley Qualls is a fantastic example of how someone with very little money and experience can become a huge success online.
When she was 14 years old Ashley borrowed $8 from her Mom and set up a new website, where she created her own Myspace layouts and gave them away for free.
There is nothing to buy on her site at all, as all her revenue comes from advertising to the tune of $1 million a year, only 3 years after she started.
You can read the full story, and watch a video interview with her on Yahoo news, which includes a chat with her Mom and friends, who she employs to help her run the site:

Tips for Resume
On the previous post, I've told that there are no guarantee for us to get hired by the government. So, why don't spent our little time to read on these do and don't tips in creating our resume...
Job Resume Do's...
Do always follow a uniform font and format.
Do always have dates of employment listed.
Do keep clean alignment - all bullets, dates, tables, etc. in tab lines.
Do be consistent. For example, if you use the date format 11/98-12/00 on one job, don't use 1998-2000 on another.
Do make sure that you list your employment history in chronological order, beginning with the most recent or current job at the top down to oldest at the bottom.
Do only put your education at the top of your resume if you have a degree; if you've only completed high school, put it at the bottom.
Do list skills used/learned in bulleted, partial sentence structure, under each position. This shows a timeline of what skills were acquired when and where.
Do only list the last ten years of experience, unless your current position or a significant part of your experience dates back further.
Do have a "Summary of Qualifications" outlining what your specialties are.
Do leave off all church affiliations and personal information (age, sex, etc.)
Do use your objective to sell a company on why they should interview you, instead of what you are looking for (such as growing company offering career advancement).
Do list consecutive years of temporary work together as one job, instead of listing each assignment separately, which can make you appear unstable. List the name of the staffing firm you worked for and the type of positions you worked instead.
Job Resume Don'ts...
Don't list personal information such as marital status, the number of children you have, or your birth date.
Don't list the year you graduated from high school.
Don't use paper with designs on it. It doesn't fax well.
Don't stretch the length of your resume to more than two pages.
Don't use more than two fonts.
Don't refer to yourself in third person (he, she, and it).

Assalamualaikum to all my classmates!!!
Did you find yesterday was a very interesting class?.I felt so excited and can feel that my students also will like it.In addition,we can see which career is suit with my personality. Moreover,if I relate the matching between personality and which career is suit with me,I will said it is relate with Holland's theory.Holland said,a person's behavior is determined by an interaction between his or her personality and the characteristics of his or her environment. So,people will search for environments that will let them use their skills and abilities, express their attitudes and values, and take on agreeable problems and roles.Wassalam.
ASSALAMUALAIKUM CLASS...
I just want to share my experience about yesterday class..I'm very interested to do the onet test and I feel this system is very useful to us as a future counselor. So that for me it is compulsory for all counselor to have this system in our own computer.Like dr said,if the students want to know about their suitable carreer, the students just click2 and they can find the information and answer about what career they interested and suitable with them. One thing that comes to my mind like sister aisyah ask that is that exist the onet but in malay version?and dr answer no....For me,it is some kind of barrier that students may face because they have to understand the english in order to answer the question. How about the students that comes from the rural area?not all students in this area understand the english. So my suggestion here, we as a future counselor must tries to develop system like onet but in malay version.TQ
Total recall
A GOOD memory is an asset for everyone, but it is essential for job seekers. Have you ever failed to recall key information during an interview, or do you get overwhelmed by a ton of information you have to remember while preparing for one?
There are several memory techniques to help you improve your memory in a very short time. However, before you start your journey of developing a super memory, you need to be aware of and understand certain stumbling blocks in your way. What are these blocks?
1 DISBELIEF
Most people, including job seekers, have such a high level of disbelief in their memory capacity that they don’t even try to memorise new information. For a job seeker to do well in an interview, he has to have as much information as possible about the prospective employer’s company.
What causes such disbelief in their memory power? The simple answer is “lack of awareness”. The brain is the most amazing machine on the planet. If you train your brain, nothing is impossible. Make sure that you assign your memory its true value.
Many people brag about their memory, but don’t do anything to make it good. You just can’t wish to improve your memory. You need to act. You have to give your memory a good workout. The next time you want to memorise anything, just make a committed effort. Believe that you can do it. You will be surprised with the result.
2 LACK OF INTEREST
If you have to memorise any information, you have to be interested in it. Trying to memorise information without being interested in it just wastes your precious time.
Try to find ways and means of making the information fun to learn. Try to find an expert on the subject and discuss the topic with him. The expert can explain the same information in a way that makes the subject come alive.
When you are preparing for an interview, it is a good idea to talk to someone in the organisation you want to work in. It’s not that difficult to get in touch with some employees if you try. Doing this helps you to better understand the organisation and makes the process more interesting because you can now ask questions and get reliable answers.
Here’s a tip: If the information is not interesting enough, it’s your duty to make sure it is interesting.
3 DISUSE
The fastest way to forget information is to not use it in your day-to-day life. Research indicates that people forget about 80 per cent of the new information they learn in less than 24 hours. So use the information you collect as much as possible.
After putting in some effort to compile as much data as you can about the organisation you want to join, you will have a fair idea about its different aspects.
However, if you don’t take proper measures to retain the information, you may forget much of it before the interview. Here are some things you can do to make sure that the information is retained in your brain for a long time:
● Explain the information to someone else.
● Discuss the points with your friends.
● Write a summary in your own words.
● Write an article about it.
● Think about how you can pass on the information to a five-year-old child.
By doing any of the above tasks, you are now making the process of learning and memorising an enjoyable one.
Memory improvement is not possible unless you kick the three stumbling blocks out of your way. If you take action in eliminating these traps, you will not only do better in your interviews, you will also effectively cope with “information overloads” once you are on the job.

SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
Have students, working individually or in co-operative groups, list as many personal interests, strengths, talents, and skills as possible and record these in their journals. Encourage them to expand their journal entries with stories of how people can use their talents and abilities.
-Invite parents and community members (e.g., musicians, artists, craftspeople) to speak to the class about their particular skills or talents.
-Have students engage in dramatic play that portrays people with a range of interests, abilities, and talents. Debrief by having students identify each character’s positive features.
-Hold celebration days to recognize students’ achievements.
-Arrange for visitors from the community or students’ families to share information about their jobs (volunteer or paid). Have students write thank-you cards to people who have participated.
-Plan field trips that provide opportunities for students to observe people in a number of jobs in a variety of settings. After, have students compile a list of all the jobs they saw, as well as any others they can think of in the community. Have them classify these jobs into various categories (e.g., indoor versus outdoor, paid versus volunteer, making things versus providing services).
-As a class, make a collage, bulletin board, or scrapbook of pictures relating to a variety of jobs. Encourage students to develop and add to the collection throughout the year.
-Provide a variety of opportunities for students to participate in hands-on projects modelling work skills (e.g., baking, woodworking, peer helping, operating a school store, designing costumes). Have students suggest paid and volunteer situations in which these skills might be needed.

Nature of the Work
Counselors assist people with personal, family, educational, mental health, and career problems. Their duties vary greatly depending on their occupational specialty, which is determined by the setting in which they work and the population they serve.
Educational, vocational, and school counselors provide individuals and groups with career and educational counseling. School counselors assist students of all levels, from elementary school to postsecondary education. They advocate for students and work with other individuals and organizations to promote the academic, career, personal, and social development of children and youth. School counselors help students evaluate their abilities, interests, talents, and personalities to develop realistic academic and career goals. Counselors use interviews, counseling sessions, interest and aptitude assessment tests, and other methods to evaluate and advise students. They also operate career information centers and career education programs. Often, counselors work with students who have academic and social development problems or other special needs.
Elementary school counselors observe children during classroom and play activities and confer with their teachers and parents to evaluate the children’s strengths, problems, or special needs. In conjunction with teachers and administrators, they make sure that the curriculum addresses both the academic and the developmental needs of students. Elementary school counselors do less vocational and academic counseling than high school counselors.
High school counselors advise students regarding college majors, admission requirements, entrance exams, financial aid, trade or technical schools, and apprenticeship programs. They help students develop job search skills, such as resume writing and interviewing techniques. College career planning and placement counselors assist alumni or students with career development and job-hunting techniques.
School counselors at all levels help students to understand and deal with social, behavioral, and personal problems. These counselors emphasize preventive and developmental counseling to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they worsen and to enhance students’ personal, social, and academic growth. Counselors provide special services, including alcohol and drug prevention programs and conflict resolution classes. They also try to identify cases of domestic abuse and other family problems that can affect a student’s development.
Counselors interact with students individually, in small groups, or as an entire class. They consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, medical professionals, and social workers to develop and implement strategies to help students succeed.
Vocational counselors, also called employment or career counselors, provide mainly career counseling outside the school setting. Their chief focus is helping individuals with career decisions. Vocational counselors explore and evaluate the client’s education, training, work history, interests, skills, and personality traits. They may arrange for aptitude and achievement tests to help the client make career decisions. They also work with individuals to develop their job-search skills and assist clients in locating and applying for jobs. In addition, career counselors provide support to people experiencing job loss, job stress, or other career transition issues.
Rehabilitation counselors help people deal with the personal, social, and vocational effects of disabilities. They counsel people with disabilities resulting from birth defects, illness or disease, accidents, or other causes. They evaluate the strengths and limitations of individuals, provide personal and vocational counseling, and arrange for medical care, vocational training, and job placement. Rehabilitation counselors interview both individuals with disabilities and their families, evaluate school and medical reports, and confer with physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, and employers to determine the capabilities and skills of the individual. They develop rehabilitation programs by conferring with clients; these programs often include training to help clients develop job skills. Rehabilitation counselors also work toward increasing the client’s capacity to live independently.
Mental health counselors work with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and to promote mental health. They are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques used to address issues, including depression, addiction and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress, problems with self-esteem, and grief. They also help with job and career concerns, educational decisions, issues related to mental and emotional health, and family, parenting, marital, or other relationship problems. Mental health counselors often work closely with other mental health specialists, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, and school counselors.
Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors help people who have problems with alcohol, drugs, gambling, and eating disorders. They counsel individuals who are addicted to drugs, helping them to identify behaviors and problems related to their addiction. Counseling can be done on an individual basis, but is frequently done in a group setting. These counselors will often also work with family members who are affected by the addictions of their loved ones. Counselors also conduct programs aimed at preventing addictions.
Marriage and family therapists apply family systems theory, principals and techniques to individuals, families, and couples to resolve emotional conflicts. In doing so, they modify people’s perceptions and behaviors, enhance communication and understanding among family members, and help to prevent family and individual crises. Marriage and family therapists also may engage in psychotherapy of a non-medical nature, make appropriate referrals to psychiatric resources, perform research, and teach courses about human development and interpersonal relationships.
Other counseling specialties include gerontological, multicultural, and genetic counseling. A gerontological counselor provides services to elderly people and their families as they face changing lifestyles. Genetic counselors provide information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. These counselors identify families at risk, interpret information about the disorder, analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence, and review available options with the family.

It is good or bad to get sponsorship?
Salam to all of my friends...Selamat Hari Raya Maaf Zahir Batin.Do you still remember about previous class that we discussed about it is good or not if we counseling students sponsored by KPM?.For me both have a positive and negative impact...For example the good things that if we sponsored by KPM is firstly, our posting is guarantee. We as a students do not have to worry about our job after we get a degree.Besides, the good things is we get a big amount of money. The bad things if we are sponsor by KPM is we have to follow their contract that is we have to teach at least 5 years. If we want to continue our study like want to futher master,it takes time.On the other side, the good things if we are not sponsor by KPM,we are free. For instance,we can be counselor in university and also we can be a lecture not focus in school like who are sponsore by KPM.Beside that,we can direct continue our study after get a degree to master without teach first. The disadvantages if we not sponsor by KPM is after we finish our study we have to pay PTPTN that charge high interest. So what do you prefer?
SUMMARIES OF THE CAREER DEVELOPMENT THEORIES BASED ON WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED….
1) Super’s recognized that career grow up through the life span. It means career development is a long-life psychological and behavioral process and contextual which influences shaping one’s career over the life span. One of Super’s greatest contributions to career development has been his emphasis of the role self-concept development in career choices. Self-concept defined as our understanding our own self; what kind of person I have? What types of personality do I practice? What kind of abilities I have? Super recognized that the self-concept changes and develops throughout people’s lives as a result of experience. People successively refine their self-concept over time and application to the world of work creates adaptation in their career choice.
2) The second one is Holland’s Career Typology.
This theory was developed by John Holland. Holland’s theory is grounded in what he calls modal personal orientation or a developmental process established through heredity and the individual’s life history of reacting to environmental demands. Generally, individuals are attracted to a particular occupation that meets their personal needs and provides them satisfaction. In our culture, persons can be categorized as one of the following: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising or Conventional. There are six modal environments: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional. People usually search for environments that will let them exercise their skills and abilities, express their attitudes and values, and take on agreeable problems and roles. Behavior is determined by an interaction between personality and environment.
3) Lent, Brown and Hackett’s Social Cognitive Career Theory
The Social Cognition Career Theory (SCCT) has grown out by Albert Bandura’s Social
Cognitive theory. He attempts to address issues of culture, gender, genetic endowment, social context and unexpected life events that may interact with and supersede the effects of career-related choices. The SCCT focuses on the connection of self-efficacy, outcome expectations and personal goals that influence an individual’s career choice. Through an evolutionary process beginning in early childhood and continuing throughout adulthood, one narrows the scope to successful endeavors to focus on and form a career goal/choice.

Finding the Right Match
How Dating Lessons Can Apply to Your Job Search
If you're in the middle of a job search, a change of perspective might help you gain the edge you need to secure a new opportunity. One approach to consider: Think of the process like dating.
From wooing a potential employer to the nervousness of the first face-to-face meeting, dating and searching for a job may have more in common than you think. Here are a few similarities between the two and what you can learn from them:
Play the odds. Much like dating, the job search is a numbers game. The more you "advertise" yourself, the better your chances of finding a match. Tell everyone you know when hunting for a new position. Also, consider where you can meet new contacts. That includes many of the same places you might look for a date, like the gym, grocery store or even at your dentist's office. You never know where you will meet someone who could assist you.
And don't forget about the Web. In a survey by our company, nearly two-thirds of executives said professional networking sites -- such as LinkedIn -- will prove useful in their recruiting efforts over the next three years.
Don't be afraid to follow up. One of the biggest hurdles daters face is knowing when to follow up with someone they just met. The same thought may go through your head once you submit your resume to a potential employer. Instead of allowing yourself to get tied up in knots, be proactive.
According to another survey by our company, 82 percent of executives polled said that job seekers should contact hiring managers within two weeks of submitting application materials. By doing so, you'll be able to reaffirm your interest in the position and judge your status.
Put your best foot forward. For all intents and purposes, an interview is a first date. You're trying to impress a hiring manager and convince him or her to see you again. By arriving to the interview ahead of time, dressing in a professional manner and having thought about your answers to typical questions, you can show the person that you're serious about the position and are a strong candidate.
Most importantly, like dating advice you've probably received in the past, the best strategy is to be yourself. Disguising your personality won't help you -- or the hiring manager -- determine if the opportunity is right for you.
Assess the other party. Part of your mission while on a date is getting a sense of what that the other person is like. The same is true of a job interview. Research the firm ahead of time so you can come with questions about the company, its culture and the position. For example, what is the firm's long-term outlook? How common is it for employees to work on the weekend? What are the growth prospects like? The hiring manager's answers will help you identify any incompatibilities or determine that you've found the right match.
A final word of advice, whether you're looking for your soul mate or a job: Keep a positive attitude. Both searches can prove frustrating and take longer than you expect. But it's worth the time and effort when you find the right match.

QUALITY TEACHERS
In the Star on May 12, 2005, our education minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has announced that in a bid to "enhance the quality of teachers in the country", "all teacher training colleges may soon be elevated to teacher education institutes (IPGs)".
Instead of providing a teacher training course at diploma level, IPGs would offer degree programmes to meet the target of having only graduate teachers in secondary schools and 50% graduate teachers in primary schools by 2010.
It is laudable that the Mininstry of Education (MOE) have identified the quality of teachers being one of the key factors in producing quality students and graduates from our education system. Some of the common remarks (although I've yet to see a detailed study) made with regards to teachers today are not very flattering. They have included being "very poor in English language", "disinterested in teaching" as well as being of poor quality because "the newer recruits are that of graduates who were not able to seek employment elsewhere".
However, MOE should note that a superficial change and rise in status of training colleges to IPGs, and awards of degree programs instead of diplomas will not solve the problems we face today. It is a similar problem faced by many "universities" today. Over the last 5-8 years, many polytechnics have been converted to universities in the country in a bid to improve the "quality of education" and increase the number of degree graduates. What the conversion has managed to do is to successfully increase the number of degree graduates but without being able to significantly improve the quality of education - hence you are getting diploma graduates masked as degree holders. Given that scenario, it's not surprising that the number of degree holders who are jobless have increased significantly. What I'd really be interested in, will be to find out which institutions have our jobless degree holders graduated from (if someone can provide me with these statistics, that'll be great!)
Given the above, it's to a certain extent comforting to hear our Education Minister outlined:
... four strategies to elevate the teaching profession – enhancing the selection of teacher trainees, improving the teaching environment, restoring regard for teachers in society and promoting pride in teachers.
“There have already been some positive developments, such as the new promotional opportunities for excellent principals and teachers to the Special Grade C (Jusa C) category."
Of the strategies outlined, I would regard "enhancing the selection of teacher trainees" as being the most important. For if the quality of recruits are high, these new teachers will perform credibly even in adverse circumstances for the other 3 factors mentioned. As highlighted by one of the comments on an earlier posting, there are many teachers who were of great quality and have produced brilliant students in the past, even though the facilities and environment are probably no where near what's available today. I'm a firm believer that if the new recruits to the teaching colleges are of poor quality (for e.g., diploma or degree graduates who can't find work in the private or even public sector), then the maxim of "rubbish in, rubbish out" will apply.Hence, one of the key reforms that are required by our education system (and as highlighted briefly on my posting on model schools) is the wage structure for teachers in Malaysia. I am certain that not even the Malaysian MOE will doubt the quality of education in Singapore, and the number 1 lesson we should pick from them (if nothing else) is to remunerate our teachers near to private sector levels. Our quality fresh graduates are paid between RM1,600 to RM2,200 in the private sector today. The new teachers with at least a good second class upper degree (say, CGPA > 3.0), should be paid at least RM1,500, if not more at RM1,800. All the other factors such as " to improve the lot of teachers, the ministry has commissioned a review of teachers’ workload" are not significantly useful. To me, even if a new graduate has the potential to be a great teacher, and has strong interest in being a teacher, it seems obvious to me that 9 out of 10 such cases will opt for a private sector position paying RM2,000 as opposed to a teaching profession today paying in the region of RM1,200 (with insignificant increments as well!). I would strongly argue for the case of lifting more of our diesel and petrol subsidies, if these subsidies are then diverted to pay our teachers. I am certain some RM6.7 billion of funds is more than sufficient to attract quality teachers to the profession, and this investment will be priceless to our future.
The Minister has also stated that:
“I have noticed that only teachers who take pride in their profession will strive to produce champions."
I agree with the above statement by the Minister. And consistent with my argument above, attracting the higher quality graduates to be teachers will likely create a pool of teachers who will take more "pride" in their profession. Poorer quality recruits will understandably have less pride in their work (there's a reason why they are "poorer"). The Minister has added:
“It is my hope that our education system will continue to be blessed with such teachers"
Yes, we all hope so too. :)
