More IPT graduates getting unemployed..

Hi… this is the 1st time I write in this blog. I just want to highlight and discuss with you all about an increasing of unemployment rate among the graduates in Malaysia although it had been highlight in our previous class... Because for me, it seems like a worrying trend and as a higher learning education students, we need to know about this facts.

For many years, the issue cropped up again and again, made the news headlines, and even hit the parliament. It have no longer when a degree scroll can become your automatic passport to employment because for me, i think nowadays, people with higher education is no longer a symbol of career success and the scroll not promise us to get a better job referring to our qualification. This may sound painful for graduates but let’s face it.

I have read an article from one of the IPT student who gives a comment in the internet whereby he found that, in July 2007, The Sun newspaper reported that the unemployment rate of public universities has reached a staggering 70%, whereas the private institutions recorded 26% and foreign graduates 34%. Out of the 70%, the highest unemployment was contributed by the following statistics:

  • Universiti Teknologi MARA, UiTM – 3,278 (16.2%)

  • Universiti Utara Malaysia, UUM – 1,532 (7.6%)

  • Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, UTM – 1,147 (5.7%)

  • Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, UKM – 971 (4.8%)

  • Universiti Putra Malaysia, UPM – 919 (4.5%)

And a survey has conducted also indicated that many of unemployed local graduates are from computer science and information technology degree holders. However, as we hearing in the newspaper and media each day, this field are still lacking of an IT expert and IT programmer. Is the job market getting more competitive, or it is the job seekers and graduates are actually unmarketable these days? Or is it, our local education have failed to offer a sufficient quality education to produce the necessary quality in the workforce which the industry required? Can we blame it entirely on education?

i do agree with your fact that they are too many unemploy students outside especially in it field..for my opinion, this is happen because many of them are too choosy, they hope they will employ as a it executive, manager or etc. at the big aircond office with their own secretary who will jote down their timetable, make for cofee etc.by then this situation was a dream only.they supposely manage to open their own bussiness it.they have to start from the bottom to study that people in malaysia need them in order to wider the coverage for it usage.our goverment was giving many opportunities for graduated students get involved in it bisnes, for example at msc.so do you agree with me?

salam..
thanks sis syarimah for your opinion. i also agree that many of IT graduate students are too choosy and they are hoping a higher salary without much effort.
and i agree with your opinion that our young generation that have IT knowledge should expand and spread their knowledge by open up the business such as IT consultant for company, programming and etc. There are also government institutions such as MARA and etc. that had opened broad opportunities for these group of people to start their IT business by giving some funds or loans. Therefore, they should not have any excuse to broad up their mind to involve in own business rather than dependent to the government and private sector job opportunities.
